Amylin Pharmaceuticals, LLC was founded in 1987 on the strength of a conviction that a new peptide hormone discovered at Oxford University, called amylin, could have real therapeutic value for patients. That belief gave birth to a process of continual discovery and innovation that has defined Amylin for a quarter of a century, allowing it to bring three innovative medicines to patients with diabetes. Now as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bristol-Myers Squibb, Amylin remains committed to the discovery of innovative medicines that have the potential to transform the way diabetes and related metabolic disorders are treated.
Summary of Key Activities
Amylin is a well-established biopharmaceutical company with advanced capabilities in research, development, manufacturing, and all aspects of commercialization.
Research. Amylin continues to explore the potential of peptide science with a peptide hybrid (fusion of two different peptide hormones, within a single molecular entity with dual pharmacology) that is moving to clinical development for the potential treatment of diabetes.
Development. Amylin continues to expand opportunities for its commercialized products and focus on innovative new therapies for diabetes and metabolic disease. Amylin’s experienced clinical development organization is focused on the following areas: the development of exenatide suspension formulations that do not need reconstitution; and metreleptin, a recombinant analog of the human hormone leptin for the treatment of rare forms of lipodystrophy, which is currently under regulatory review and, if approved, would represent the first and only treatment option to target the underlying pathophysiology of this rare and life-threatening disease.
