Independent Medical Education Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Independent Medical Education Program supports activities designed to enhance the professional skills and knowledge of health care professionals, when the program is independently developed and conducted by a qualified medical education provider. Supported programs must be objective, balanced, and scientifically rigorous.

In this regard, we help sponsor independent medical education programs and activities such as symposia, satellite symposia, conferences, teleconferences, live Web casts and multi-speaker meetings. In addition, we support development of educational materials including: websites, audio recordings, videos, journals and other means of continuing medical education online.

All programming must be primarily dedicated to promoting objective and balanced scientific education related to disease state and treatment options.

We are particularly interested in proposals in the following areas:

  • Acute coronary disease
  • Atherothrombosis
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Cancer
    • Breast
    • Gastrointestinal
      • Includes esophagus, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon) and rectum
    • Head and neck
    • Hematologic malignancies
    • Lung
    • Metastatic melanoma
    • Prostate
  • Hepatitis B
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Major depressive disorders
  • Peripheral arterial disease
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Schizophrenia

Bristol-Myers Squibb does not support conferences or programs which are very similar to those that have previously taken place.

Eligible recipients for medical education grants for accredited programs and materials include:

  • hospitals
  • community health centers
  • academic medical centers
  • medical universities
  • professional associations
  • patient advocacy groups
  • managed care organizations
  • accredited medical education companies
  • physician group practices
  • pharmacies

Eligible recipients for medical education grants for non-accredited* programs and materials include:

  • hospitals
  • health care facilities
  • academic medical centers
  • medical universities
  • medical associations
  • patient advocacy groups

*Attendance at a non-accredited program must be open to all health care professionals in the broader community. The program content for non-accredited programs must be similar to the type of content for which continuing professional education credits are granted or must otherwise be scientific in nature.

Important Information:

  • Medical education grants may not be used to fund the recipient organization’s operational expenses.
  • Meals must be open to all attendees, modest in costs, and clearly subordinate to the amount of time spent on educational activities.
  • Publishable educational materials include printed, recorded or computer-based materials. Grant requests may include funds for the purchase, reproduction, and/or distribution of educational materials, but only if the request is submitted before the content is developed.
  • If the grant funds the entire cost of the development of educational materials, the grant recipient may not charge participants for those materials.
  • If the grant partially funds the development of enduring materials, an appropriate reduction in the cost of the materials must be made.
  • Bristol-Myers Squibb maintains strict policies governing the manner in which educational materials supported by a Bristol-Myers Squibb grant are distributed to health care professionals. Our policies allow for the dissemination of educational materials only to recipients who have specifically requested them.
