Facility Information
SYRACUSE, NEW YORK
WORLDWIDE MEDICINES
Facts & Figures

- For more than 60 years, Bristol-Myers Squibb
employees in Syracuse have been developing and manufacturing new medicines
that extend and enhance human life. From the early days of penicillin
to the current era ushering in new and complex biotherapeutics, Bristol-Myers
Squibb has maintained a strong commitment to the Syracuse community
through employment, philanthropic endeavors and environmental stewardship.
- Several critical functions are located at this
90-acre site in East Syracuse, New York. Areas of expertise include:
world class biotechnology development and manufacturing operations,
oncology manufacturing, and pharmaceutical research laboratories. These
employees work to bring life-enhancing and life-saving medicines to
the world in the areas of oncology and auto-immune diseases.
- The biotechnology expertise in Syracuse serves
as the company's center of excellence in biologics drug development
and manufacturing. This serves a vital role in the global network and
also has a significant impact on the Syracuse community.
Economic Development
- The company spends more than $2.6 million in taxes annually and local
payroll exceeds $50 million. The Company is a member of the Greater
Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, the Metropolitan Development Association
of Syracuse and Central New York, the Manufacturer's Association of
Central New York, MedTech and the Central New York Biotechnology Research
Center. Through these memberships, the company is supported by public/private
partnerships to further enhance business relationships.
- The site has invested more than $140 million in the campus in the
last few years.
Community and Social Progress

BMS Syracuse in the Community
- Bristol-Myers Squibb Company is a worldwide employer with a local
point of view. The company pledges, "Conscientious citizenship,
a helping hand for worthwhile causes and constructive action that supports
a clean and healthy environment."
- The Syracuse site brings this pledge to life by financially supporting
more than 100 not-for-profit organizations in Central New York and by
making in-kind donations in the form of laboratory equipment and furniture.
Priority areas for contributions include: hospitals and health organizations,
science education initiatives, civic and cultural organizations, and
neighborhood not-for-profits.
- In partnership with the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company Foundation, the
company announced on February 14, 2006, a $1 million donation to the
Upstate Medical University Foundation Children's Hospital. This contribution
ranked the largest corporate gift in Upstate Medical University Foundation's
history. This $1 million gift will allow for the Bristol-Myers Squibb
Treehouse Lobby which will feature a café, lounges, play areas,
a gift shop and ample seating areas for relaxing, just steps away from
the patient's bedside.
- Beyond financial contributions, employee volunteers serve in a leadership
role on numerous not-for-profit boards. Additionally, employee volunteers
visit area schools to encourage students to consider careers in the
sciences.

- Since 1993, the site has sponsored Science Horizons - a one-week summer
science adventure for seventh and eighth grade students. The objective
of the program is to kindle the interests of young people who have demonstrated
an interest in science, math or technology. Now known as a premiere
science camp in Central New York, Science Horizons offers students experience
in a variety of scientific disciplines in a hands-on environment. A
highlight of the program is the student visit to the Bristol facility.
- A primary outreach tool of the Syracuse facility is the Community
Advisory Council. Since 1994, the Council has served as a conduit of
information between the neighbors of the facility and the company. Representatives
from East Syracuse, Eastwood and the City of Syracuse, as well as other
interested professionals, voluntarily attend meetings twice a year with
the senior management of the site. Council members hear updates on the
company from a business, environmental and safety perspective.
- The Community Advisory Council publishes the Community
Reporter, a newsletter distributed to 9,000 homes and businesses
surrounding the facility. Each newsletter also contains a postage-paid
comment card which can be returned to the company with comments or concerns.
Safety at BMS Syracuse
- Bristol-Myers Squibb in Syracuse is recognized as a leader in the
Syracuse community for its outstanding emergency response standards.
While rarely utilized, the site's Hazardous Materials Response Team
practices monthly for any potential incident. This volunteer team conducts
full-scale emergency drills annually with the neighboring fire department.
- Additionally, twenty-four hours a day, neighbors can speak in person
with personnel by calling 315-432-2121.
- In September of 2006, the site worked one million hours without a
lost time injury. This is the equivalent of a family of four going 28
years without having an accident that would cause one of them to miss
a day of school or work!
- Policies and procedures have long been in place to enhance protection
of employees from hazards associated with the workplace. Today, employees
look out for one another to promote a safe work environment. Employees
observe coworkers performing their daily tasks. They look for any behaviors
that might put an employee at risk of having an accident or injury such
as improper lifting or potential distractions while performing a routine
task. A behavioral based safety approach will help us to identify and
correct unsafe behaviors before they result in an accident. Our goal
is to continuously improve our site safety performance and to further
reduce injuries.
Environmental Performance

- We believe that the environmental performance of the Bristol-Myers
Squibb Company in Syracuse is outstanding. As the site transitioned
from a large volume bulk antibiotic manufacturer to a lower volume biologic
manufacturer, the environmental impact has been dramatically reduced.
The manufacturing processes of biologic medicines are typically water-based
and produce lower emissions and less waste than earlier chemical manufacturing
processes.
- In fact, since 1988, the site has reduced its chemical emissions by
95 percent. The Environmental Protection Agency tracks industry emissions
under Section 313 of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization ACT
(SARA). Reports can be found at the EPA website for TRI Reports at:
http://www.epa.gov/triexplorer/facility.htm
- Bristol-Myers Squibb in Syracuse has sophisticated manufacturing and
biosafety facilities and procedures to assure that its processes are
fully contained and the products manufactured are completely harvested.
Beyond pollution prevention, the facilities and procedures assure the
products are pure and efficiently manufactured.
- Due to the proactive nature and success of the facility's environmental
programs, the site has received numerous awards including the State
University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry's
Feinstone Environmental Award - a national award bestowed on a company
that exhibits exemplary environmental sustainability initiatives.
- As part of the 2010 Sustainability goals established by the corporation,
the Syracuse site has supported the protection of endangered species.
The Chittenango Ovate Amber Snail can only be found at Chittenango Falls
State Park, just 15 miles east of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Syracuse
facility. This endangered species receives the support of Bristol-Myers
Squibb in Syracuse through several local organizations that are currently
helping to protect it - including the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. During the
summer months, employees participate in a habitat population survey
at the falls. Other support includes improving awareness through education
on the sensitivity of the snail's habitat.
