Governance Structure and Management Systems: Management Systems Certification

ISO 14001 at Bristol-Myers Squibb

ISO 14001 Certified Facilities (as of August 1, 2008)

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), based in Geneva, Switzerland, has established ISO 14001 as a voluntary, international specification for environmental management systems. The standard is recognized in more than 90 countries. We consider ISO 14001 to be a significant opportunity to demonstrate the integrity of Bristol-Myers Squibb’s EHS management system (EMS). Following an internal assessment of our EMS in 1996, we self-declared that our companywide EHS management system meets or exceeds the requirements of ISO 14001.

We reviewed our EMS in 2006 against the current ISO 14001:2004 requirements. As a result, we identified a need for further improvement in document control from external origin/sources and in the management of EMS nonconformities. We also identified opportunities to improve access to certain procedures and update our internal EHS website. We are currently addressing these areas.

Bristol-Myers Squibb is a diversified, decentralized company, and each operating site makes its own decision regarding whether to obtain third-party certification. In fact, our facilities in São Paulo and Shanghai were the first within their business sectors to become ISO 14001 certified in their respective countries.

We believe that ISO 14001 certification provides significant benefits by:

  • Supporting business growth through greater export and marketing opportunities
  • Enhancing government relations
  • Improving access to capital
  • Demonstrating our commitment to – and accountability for – continuous EHS improvement
