Bristol-Myers Squibb: Goals and Key Indicators

Goals and Key Indicators
Summary of Key Performance Indicators

Unless otherwise indicated, data are from our operations worldwide. Environmental data in this table are presented in absolute terms and normalized by sales (per $1,000 worldwide sales). See the Environmental Performance section for a discussion of why Bristol-Myers Squibb normalizes data by sales.

Since 2010 BMS has acquired several companies that are now under our operational control. To maintain our 2015 goal program in a manner that proper comparisons can be made we have excluded these acquisitions from the 2015 goals and are establishing site specific goals, i.e., 2% annual reduction through 2015 in energy use (proxy for GHG) and water use. In 2013 these acquisitions accounted for approximately 2% of our energy use, 2% of our greenhouse gas emissions and < 1% of our water use. Our internal guidance states that an acquisition must be operational under our control for greater than six months to be included in the sustainability metrics program. Following the completion of our 2015 goal period we will reset our goals to include these and other acquisitions as legacy operations.

(1) Global BMS data based on a three year rolling average.
(2) Similar pharmaceutical company data based on U.S. data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) site population 250-999.
(3) 2008 data; no BLS DAWC rate available for 2009 - Data too small to be displayed.
(4) The increase in waste generated was due to the first full year of full-scale production at our new biologics facility, existing facility capacity expansion and waste generated as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
(5) Scope 1 - Direct energy use and greenhouse gas emissions from operations. US/Canada sales fleet has been reassigned to Scope 1 from Scope 3. See details in technical sections.
(6) Scope 2 - Indirect energy use and greenhouse gas emissions only from purchased electricity and steam.
(7) Scope 3 - Energy use and greenhouse gas emissions only from business air travel. See details in technical sections.
(8) Energy from on site renewable sources is not factored into total energy use.
(9) BLS 1st Quartile 2012 - Data too small to be displayed.

Discrepancies in percent change data are due to rounding; detailed numbers are used in the calculations.
