Facts and Figures
Bristol-Myers Squibb operates one of its two bulk API Manufacturing sites in Ireland at Cruiserath in north County Dublin. This facility is a flexible, multifunctional, automated bulk pharmaceutical manufacturing plant. Construction of the facility commenced in 2000 and manufacturing started in 2004.
This plant manufactures medicine for hypertension.
Community and Social Progress
Bristol Myers-Squibb Cruiserath places great emphasis on supporting worthwhile charities and is committed to maintaining excellent relationships with the local community.
Employees at Cruiserath are very active in working with local voluntary organisations, and also hosting fund raising events. These have included sponsored “beard shaves,” quizzes and a cake sale which have raised over €20,000 for cancer research and an Irish Children’s hospital.
The Cruiserath facility also supports efforts to protect endangered species. With the assistance of BMS, the Irish Peatland Conservation Council commenced a number of habitat management projects aimed at supporting the population of the endangered Marsh Fritillary butterfly at Lullymore bog in Co. Kildare. The Marsh Fritillary larva nest and feed in the leaves of the bogland plant “Devils-Bit Scabacious.” Birch-willow scrub plants encroach upon the semi-natural grassland where the Devils-Bit Scabacious thrives in abundance. Left unmanaged, the scrub plants would engulf the rare bog grassland, and would eventually lead to the displacement of the Devils-Bit Scabacious and the extinction of the butterfly in the habitat. Two plots were cleared to allow recolonisation of the Devils-Bit Scabacious. The plots will be closely managed and monitored by a team including BMS volunteers over a five year period to evaluate the recolonisation rates of the Devils-Bit Scabacious and the butterfly itself.
Safety
The PharmaChemical Ireland Responsible Care Award was received in October 2011 for improvements to the Lockout/Tagout program implemented by the Operational Excellence Team during 2010.
BMS Cruiserath is proud of our record of safe operations without adverse environmental impact.
The Cruiserath plant is subject to inspection by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) which enforces safety regulations in Ireland.
The Safety Management System at BMS Cruiserath has been certified to OSHAS 18001 since 2007.
Since 2007, this site has received annual awards from the National Irish Safety Organisation (NISO) for excellence in the management of safety.
In 2010, the site was proud to be recognized by NISO when one of the safety reps onsite won the Safety Rep of the Year award. This is a nation-wide competition and the winner is pictured here at the awards ceremony receiving his prize.
The Cruiserath site is also the winner of the BMS Presidents Award for Safety for 2008 and 2009. This BMS award recognizes those sites that achieve a low accident rate and develop an innovative safety improvement program that has been adopted by another BMS facility.
Environmental Performance
The site is licensed and audited by the Environmental Protection Agency and is required to operate within rigorous management and operational controls as well as specified emission limits.
Containment, abatement and waste treatment systems installed at the facility are state-of-the-art and conform to the highest environmental and safety standards. The EHS Laboratory Quality Management System is certified to ISO 17025 for six wastewater test methods.
Some environmental highlights are listed below:
Efforts to reduce flows to sewer from on-site activities have resulted in a further 11.0% reduction in the total volumetric emission to sewer during 2009. This represents the lowest volume sent to the municipal waste water treatment plant since commencement of site operations and has contributed toward 21.6% less municipal water being consumed in 2009.
A project was implemented in May 2009 to recycle isopropanol (IPA) wash and dichloromethane (DCM) distillate on an intermediate product, resulting in approximately 30% less IPA and 58% less DCM usage per batch.
The Cruiserath facility has significantly reduced waste disposed offsite in 2009, achieving a
34.7% decrease in the quantity of non hazardous waste; and
34% decrease in the quantity of hazardous waste.
These decreases result primarily from continued improvements in the waste segregation and recovery programmes managed by Facilities and Technical Services. These include:
Provision of sufficient recycling bins in communal areas;
Segregation of cafeteria waste for recycling, for example, bottles, glass, tins, food waste, and cooking oil; and
Use of a compactor and a twin plastic / cardboard baler near the cafeteria to increase recycling and reduce the number of collections from recycling companies
Energy Efficiency
Preservation of our natural resources is one of Bristol-Myers Squibb’s key commitments. Both our Swords and Cruiserath facilities are operating to the new European Energy Management standard EN 16001, which entails a systematic approach to sustainable energy efficiency.
The sites are committed to energy and carbon emissions reduction. Each site has a dedicated energy team lead by a full time energy manager. The reduction of energy is a core objective for both sites and receives the full support of senior management on each site.
This structured approach to energy efficiency has resulted in significant energy reductions. The Cruiserath facility has reduced its energy consumption by over 20% since 2005 with 16% of this reduction coming in the period 2008 – 2009 while manufacturing output increased by over 40%. The Swords Site reduced energy usage over the period 2005 -2009 by 14%.
Over the last 4 years, BMS Irelands Carbon footprint has been reduced by over 8,600 tonnes and we continue to pursue innovative ways to further reduce our energy use.
