- Bristol-Myers Squibb has expanded its operations in Ireland
through the development of the manufacturing facility at Cruiserath. This facility is a flexible, multifunctional, automated
bulk pharmaceutical production plant, manufacturing medicines for blood
pressure and hypertension. Construction commenced in 2000, and manufacturing
started during the first quarter 2004.

Community and Social Progress
- Bristol Myers-Squibb Cruiserath places great emphasis on being a good
neighbour to the people of Mulhuddart, Blanchardstown, Tyrellstown and
Fingal.
- We hold meetings with local residents to share information and we
are proud of our record of safe operations without adverse environmental
impact. The company supports worthwhile charities.
- As part of our continued commitment to sourcing new recycling routes
for waste generated, Rehab Recycling reconditioned a total of 87 desktop
and laptop computers on our behalf, and these were donated for re-use
to the local Coolmine and Dunboyne Community Schools.
Safety
- Bristol-Myers Squibb has won numerous awards throughout the world for sustainability,
safety and health protection. The company is strongly committed to protecting
the environment and the health and safety of its employees, customers,
and neighbours.
- The Cruiserath plant is subject to auditing and inspection by the
health and safety authority, to regulate safety, its chemical inventory
and have in place contingencies to deal with any possible accident or
emergency.
- The safety management system at Bristol-Myers Squibb Cruiserath has been certified
to the International Standard OSHAS18001 since December 2007.
- In 2007 the Bristol-Myers Squibb Cruiserath facility received an award from the National
Irish Safety Organisation for excellence in the management of
safety.
Environmental Performance Awards & Certificates
- The site is licensed and audited by the Environmental Protection Agency.
This requires the facility to operate within rigorous management and
operational controls as well as specified emission limits.
- Containment, abatement, and waste treatment systems installed at
the facility are state-of-the-art, and conform to the highest safety
and environmental protection standards, including strict controls specified
in the Integrated Pollution Control License.
- The EHS Laboratory Quality Management System is certified to ISO 17025:2005
(General requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration
Laboratories) for five wastewater test methods.
- In 2007 a continous innovation team was established to reduce flows
to sewer from on-site activities. Their efforts resulted in a 24.2 percent
(50,800m3) reduction in the total volumetric emission to
sewer during 2007 and consequently contributed towards a 21.2 percent decrease
in the quantity of municipal water consumed on-site.
- The total quantity of all waste produced on-site reduced by 20.6%
in 2007 compared to 2006. There was a 28.4% reduction in hazardous waste
produced.
- 100 percent of all dicloromethane generated in 2007 was recovered on-site
in 2007. This compares to 43.8 percent recovered on-site in 2006.
- There was a 70.6 percent reduction in the quantity of aqueaus waste sent
off-site for disposal in 2007 as a result of treatment on-site in the
Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant.
- 60.8 percent of all waste produced in 2007 was recovered (on or off-site).
Energy Efficiency at Bristol-Myers Squibb Cruiserath
- A multi-disciplinary energy management team was established with the
goal of achieving certification to IS 393, the energy management standard.
- In 2007 Bristol-Myers Squibb Ireland won a National Responsible Care Award in the category
of energy management. A cross-site team was established to identify
the energy consumption of the two sites and to realise energy saving
opportunities.
- The initiative resulted in a combined reduction of:
- 18.4 million KwH on natural gas usage
- 1.75 million KwH reduction in electricity usage and
- on-site generation of nitrogen gas achieved a total saving equivalent
to 4.4 million kWhr electricity.
- Responsible Care is a Chemical Industry initiative which calls on
companies to demonstrate their commitment to improve all aspects of
performance which relate to protection of health, safety and the environment.
