Swords, Ireland
Facts and Figures
  • Situated on 17 acres in Swords.
  • The facility manufactures active pharmaceutical ingredients for a range of products including cardiovascular, antiviral and cancer drugs.
Community and Social Progress
  • Swords Laboratories operates a safety management system that strives to continuously improve how safety issues are addressed onsite.
  • The site has been the recipient of a safety award from the National Irish Safety Organisation every year since 2005.
Environmental Performance
  • Swords Laboratories is licensed by the Environmental Protection Agency, which requires the facility to have in place an environmental management system. The Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control licence also sets strict emission limits, which are verified by the EPA. The agency takes samples and also performs unannounced audits of the facility at least twice a year.
  • Examples include the following achievements of the site’s energy focused team in 2007:
    • A 29 percent reduction in natural gas usage by installing a smaller combustor unit in the site's air emissions abatement unit and by reducing the number of air changes in some parts of the site, thereby reducing steam demand.
    • An 11 percent reduction in electricity usage by optimizing the set-points of a number of chiller units.
    • A 37 percent reduction on the amount of energy required to produce liquid nitrogen onsite.
  • Swords Laboratories has adopted the river otter as its endangered species and works with the Irish Wildlife Trust to educate local school children and raise awareness through an annual clean-up of the local river ward, which runs alongside the site. In 2008 a new project was undertaken with a local school to rear salmon fry in their classroom and then release the fry into the river ward.
Energy
  • Preservation of our natural resources is one of Bristol-Myers Squibb’s key commitments. Both our Swords and Cruiserath facilities are operating to the new European Energy Management standard EN 16001, which entails a systematic approach to sustainable energy efficiency.
  • The sites are committed to energy and carbon emissions reduction. Each site has a dedicated energy team lead by a full time energy manager. The reduction of energy is a core objective for both sites and receives the full support of senior management on each site.
  • This structured approach to energy efficiency has resulted in significant energy reductions. The Cruiserath facility has reduced its energy consumption by over 20% since 2005 with 16% of this reduction coming in the period 2008 – 2009 while manufacturing output increased by over 40%. The Swords Site reduced energy usage over the period 2005 -2009 by 14%.
  • Over the last 4 years, BMS Irelands Carbon footprint has been reduced by over 8,600 tonnes and we continue to pursue innovative ways to further reduce our energy use.
