  • Several critical functions are located at this 90-acre site in East Syracuse, New York including:
    • Development of biologics manufacturing processes (shared with employees located at our Hopewell, NJ facility)
    • Manufacturing of biologics medicines for use in clinical trials
    • Manufacturing of biologics medicines for commercial use
  • Employees also have responsibility for authoring sections of drug applications for regulatory agencies around the world as well as providing technical transfer expertise for internal and third party manufacturing sites.
  • Consistent with the corporate strategy to become a biopharma leader, the company is transforming its site in East Syracuse to better support its current work in biologics. The site is transforming its physical appearance from a traditional industrial look to a more green biotechnology campus. The work is expected to be completed in 2012, including demolition of 50 obsolete and idle buildings and structures associated with discontinued antibiotic manufacturing processes.
  • This facilities transformation project is consistent and aligned with the corporate commitment to environmental sustainability, as the removal of outdated buildings and idle equipment will result in a significant reduction in energy consumption and ultimately the site’s overall carbon foot print.
  • The company is partnering with the State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry landscape architecture students to provide design ideas to the company for consideration as part of its facilities transformation project. As part of their landscape architecture studio, the students are benefiting from a 'real world' project that will enable them to build their portfolio, while the company will receive creative design ideas which complement the company's philosophy on sustainability.

  • The company also launched an integrated business and science curricula at East Syracuse Minoa High School called RxeSEARCH: An Educational Journey. This program is a comprehensive educational program that teaches students about the drug development process. The program is novel in its approach to integrated teaching and learning of biology, chemistry, math, social studies and language arts. It strives to educate today's youth about the risks and rewards of developing new medicines with the goal of creating informed consumers of health care. RxeSEARCH: An Educational Journey prepares students for careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
  • Since 1993, Bristol-Myers Squibb has sponsored Science Horizons - a one-week summer science adventure for seventh and eighth grade students. A highlight of the program is the student visit to the company’s Syracuse facility.
Safety at BMS Syracuse
  • In 2010, the Syracuse site achieved a milestone of three million hours worked without a lost time injury! This is equivalent to a family of four going more than 85 years without an injury or illness that would cause one of them to miss a day of school or work! The Technical Operations portion of the site also reached a milestone in 2010 by working more than a year without an accident requiring more than basic first aid treatment.
  • Also in 2010, the Syracuse site received the Technical Operations President’s Safety Award in recognition of our outstanding safety performance within Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Environmental Performance
  • BMS Syracuse has changed the majority of its production to large molecule, biologic-based medicines. The processes that produce the biologics are water based, produce lower emissions and generate less waste than typical small molecule, solvent-based processes.
  • Since 2001, the site has reduced its chemical emissions by 98%. The site has also reduced the amount of hazardous waste generated by 50% per year for the past three years.
  • For six consecutive years, BMS Syracuse’s Waste Water Pre-Treatment Plant has received an annual award from Onondaga County recognizing 100% compliance with the conditions of our Industrial Wastewater Permit.
  • The site continues to look for opportunities to improve its environmental performance. In 2010, a “Go Green” Team was formed to focus on employee education and to identify other opportunities to promote sustainability initiatives.
