Percy Carter

Percy Carter, MBA, Ph.D.

Head of Discovery Chemistry and Molecular Technologies

Drug Discovery Research

Percy leads a team responsible for discovering drug candidates across therapeutic areas and molecular platforms. His role requires collaboration across teams in multiple sites, including in the U.S. and India, to discover clinical candidates.

Percy was a Senior Research Scientist in Chemical and Physical Sciences at DuPont Pharmaceuticals from 1999-2001, and joined Bristol-Myers Squibb when the company acquired DuPont Pharmaceuticals in 2001. Shortly after joining Bristol-Myers Squibb, he began leading a team of scientists responsible for two programs, and has steadily taken on increased responsibility and leadership in Discovery Chemistry. Throughout his leadership, his teams have brought forward a number of clinical candidates into development. Prior to his current role, Percy founded the Discovery Chemistry Platforms group, which uses technology both to enhance efficiency (e.g., high throughput synthesis/purification, scale-up synthesis, and radiochemistry) and to expand the boundaries of traditional medicinal chemistry (e.g., millamolecules, anti-sense oligonucleotides, and protein conjugates).

Percy received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Harvard University, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. In 2014, Percy received his MBA from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Among other honors, Percy has received two significant recognitions within Bristol-Myers Squibb, including a leadership award within R&D for work done in Immunology Chemistry and a company-wide leadership award.

Percy is the inventor or co-inventor on 28 U.S. Patents and has authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed research publications.

Interests and Expertise

Human health and the intersection of science and medicine were natural interests for Percy; he is the son of a Ph.D. cancer researcher and a physician.

Percy believes strongly in mentorship and engaging his teams, and works to “pay forward” the inspiration and mentorship he received from leaders he has admired throughout his education and career. Outside of work, Percy is a competitive runner and father of four, and he is an active volunteer on nonprofit boards.
