Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a chronic, progressive disease involving the thickening of the heart muscle, is estimated to affect 1 in 500 adults around the world, with recent studies suggesting that a higher prevalence may exist.

HCM is the most common form of genetic heart disease and can impact anyone, regardless of their age or medical history.  While every HCM patient’s experience is unique, common signs and symptoms include chest pain, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, palpitations, fatigue, lightheadedness, dizzy spells and fainting. Unexplained symptoms can be signs of many conditions, and only a doctor can determine whether symptoms indicate HCM or another condition.

While this disease can be debilitating and life-changing, reducing physical functioning and impacting overall wellbeing, promising research offers new hope for patients with HCM.

Hear from HCM patients around the world—including the United Kingdom, Canada, and Brazil—as they share their stories of diagnosis, the challenges they’ve encountered and their aspirations for the future.

After struggling for years, she’s found new hope following starting treatment, which has helped enable her to reclaim her life and enjoy her favorite activity, Zumba. See how her story underscores the importance of consulting a physician about persistent symptoms that sometimes are easy to ignore.

Vinícius, Brazil

In 2009, Vinícius first experienced shortness of breath and dizziness while walking uphill, initially with no clear diagnosis.
