In the early hours of June 28, 1969, patrons and neighbors of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York, fought back against a violent police raid.

In 1983, lesbian women were denied entrance to Ferro’s Bar in São Paulo, Brazil, which led to an uprising and the eventual celebration of the National Day of Lesbian Pride later in the year.

In 2001, the Netherlands became the first country to fully legalize joint adoption by same-sex couples alongside its legalization of same-sex marriage.

In 2010, Argentina became the first Latin American country to legalize same-sex marriage. Two years later, in 2012, it recognized transgender and non-binary rights through the Gender Identity Law.

 

In 2017, Australia legalizes same-sex marriage after a majority of citizens vote “yes” in all states.

In 2018, the Indian Supreme Court strikes down “Section 377”, a 19th-century law that criminalized the LGBTQ+ community.
 

Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya, born in 1850, was the first woman in Europe to be awarded a doctorate and professorship in mathematics. She was also the first to join the editorial board of scientific journal.
 

Alan Turing, born in 1912, was a British mathematician and code-breaker responsible for early versions of modern computing which helped the Allied forces win World War II.



 

Born in 1954, Ben Barres was an American neurobiologist and the first openly transgender member of the US Academy of Sciences.




 

Jemma Redmond, born in 1978, was an Irish biotechnology pioneer and innovator who co-founded the 3D bio-printing firm responsible for the first ever ten-material bio-printer, which can print using live human cells.
 

Nergis Mavalvala, born 1968, is a Pakistani-American astrophysicist who was among the team of scientists that first observed gravitional waves from the collision of two black holes.

 

Svante Pääbo and Carolyn Bertozzi, both members of the LGBTQ+ community, received Nobel Prozes in 2022.

In 1978, Christopher Street Day became Switzerland's first Pride event. It became a regular annual celebration in 1994, shortly before Austria began celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride with it's first Pride parade in 1996.
 

Switzerland's LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have supported LGBTQ+ people and they continue to help to advocate for their equality.




 

In 2004, Austria's Federal Equal Treatment Act was expanded to include protections against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orentation.




 

In 2019, Austria legalized same-sex marriage and was followed three years later by Switzerland in 2022.

 

Austria issues and legally recignizes its first intersex birth certificate in 2020.




 

In 2022, Switzerland allowed people to legally change their gender through self-identification.
