More than Guts: Inflammatory bowel disease podcast

This educational podcast series, More Than Guts, discusses pertinent and powerful IBD stories from both patients and health care professionals. Through expert-led discussions and open conversations, the series aims to help change mindsets and behaviours for better patient outcomes in IBD care. This non-promotional series has been organised and funded by Bristol Myers Squibb.

 

Episode 1: Much ado about COVID

In the first episode of this educational IBD podcast series, Dr Nick Kennedy, Consultant Gastroenterologist from Exeter and national expert on IBD and COVID, is joined by three guests: Cath Stanfield, Consultant Nurse at Northern Care Alliance, Manchester Royal, Kelly Allison CEO of a digital communications agency and an IBD patient, and Kay Greveson, Advanced Nurse Practitioner in IBD at the London IBD clinic. Together, the panel discuss challenges they faced during the pandemic in the management of IBD, lessons learned from those challenges, and how the pandemic has shaped IBD care.

Episode 2: A gut response to long-term care

In this second episode of More Than Guts, Consultant Gastroenterologist and IBD specialist Dr Philip Smith at the Royal Liverpool Hospital is joined by Karen Kemp, an IBD Consultant Nurse and Neil Gooding, who was one of the first children ever diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Together, they discuss their experiences of long-term care for IBD within the NHS, challenges with achieving continuity of care and what’s needed now to effectively meet patient needs.

In this third episode of the series, Alissa Walsh, Consultant Gastroenterologist from Oxford, meets Gemma, a long-term IBD patient, and Lisa Critchley, an IBD Specialist Nurse based in Liverpool. Together, the group discuss the importance of open communication in IBD care, and the need to support patients’ emotional and mental wellbeing to empower better engagement with their own care.
