Proud to be Me

PRIDE Alliance Recognizes Pride Month 2020

We recognize and celebrate the diverse experiences and views of our workforce, and encourage every employee to bring their full authentic selves to work so they can fully engage in a meaningful way and drive our mission of helping patients prevail over serious diseases. PRIDE Alliance is a vital part of that effort by helping to ensure a diverse and inclusive culture that empowers LGBTQ+ inclusion, awareness and engagement.

PRIDE Alliance is recognizing Pride Month 2020 with a series of thought-provoking, engaging and inspiring virtual events. The theme this year is Proud to be Me, a reminder that Bristol Myers Squibb strives to have every colleague feel comfortable bringing their full authentic self to their workplace every day.

“We work to create an open and transparent culture where everyone is encouraged to bring their whole authentic selves to work. That includes placing equal value on the time and care we give to our family, personal relationships and commitments” ~ David Elkins, Chief Financial Officer, Lawrenceville, New Jersey

What I do - I am the Chief Financial Officer, responsible for Global Business Operations. I am also the Executive Sponsor of our PRIDE Alliance People & Business Resource Group.

Why BMS is a great place to work - I think BMS is unique because patients are at the heart of every decision we make. Their stories inspire us and their trust in us to provide them with the highest-quality medicines is an awesome responsibility that is both humbling and motivating. We work to create an open and transparent culture where everyone is encouraged to bring their whole authentic selves to work. Our People and Business Resource Groups (PBRGs) like PRIDE Alliance help provide a source of diverse perspectives and innovation that are critical to BMS’ mission of helping patients prevail over serious diseases. We also place equal value on the time and care we give to our family, personal relationships and commitments.

“The empowering feeling that comes from simply being your authentic self is a revelation if you've known a time without it. The culture here enabled that for me. The resulting confidence helped imbue my work with a quality and passion I had not previously recognized in myself” ~ Madhan Gounder, Associate Director, Summit, New Jersey

What I do - I work on the U.S. marketing team launching a new treatment for patients with multiple sclerosis. I also work with PRIDE Alliance on our initiative on Covering and Inclusion.

Why BMS is a great place to work - Coming to work every day knowing the impact our medicines have is fulfilling. But it’s invigorating to do that where colleagues are supportive, diversity is celebrated, and people can show up as their authentic selves, knowing they'll be valued for the quality of their work, not immutable qualities of what they are. The empowerment that comes from this is a revelation if you've known a time without it. The culture here enabled that for me and helped imbue my work with a quality and passion I had not previously recognized in myself The self-confidence resulting from this culture affected me outside work too, helping me meet and eventually marry my now partner in a wedding ceremony with family and friends—among them colleagues.

“BMS promotes and supports a diverse and inclusive culture focused on patients. That’s important to me. And BMS doesn’t just talk the talk but walks the walk. The company truly encourages everyone to bring their authentic selves to work and maintains a psychological safe workplace environment” ~ Jennie Scragg, Legal Operations Supervisor, Steinhausen, Switzerland

What I do - I am the Legal Operations Supervisor for our Global Capabilities Hub (GCH) and our facilities in Europe. I am also the founder and leader of the PRIDE Alliance for Austria, Switzerland and the GCH.

Why BMS is a great place to work - BMS promotes and supports a diverse and inclusive culture focused on patients. That’s important to me. And BMS doesn’t just talk the talk but walks the walk. The company truly encourages everyone to bring their authentic selves to work and maintains a psychological safe workplace environment. Starting the local PRIDE Alliance chapter and “mixing” my personal life with my business has really helped me grow both as an employee as well as a leader. It has been extremely fulfilling to be able to openly support my LGBTQ colleagues and help others understand the challenges we face as well as different perspectives in life and family.

“I love it when a discussion is started about BMS culture because you will usually find me somewhere upfront singing loud and proud about it. I work in an environment that embraces the importance of its culture of inclusion that makes me comfortable in feeling proud to be me and appreciate the fact that I can bring every element about me to work” ~ Angeleta Washington, IT User Experience, Tampa, Florida

What I do - I am responsible for virtual agent Chabot capabilities, artificial intelligence programs that simulate human conversations to help provide answers to questions, for our MyBMS internal portal. I am also a leader in our PRIDE Alliance Communications team.

Why BMS is a great place to work - Our culture and the level of pride that everyone has in the work that they do for our patients.  I love it when a discussion is started about BMS culture because you will usually find me somewhere upfront singing loud and proud about it!  In a previous job, I felt like I couldn’t be a Black African American LGBTQ woman in technology, not at all. BMS was a game changer for me in many ways.  Now, I work in an environment that embraces the importance of its culture of inclusion. That makes me comfortable in feeling proud to be me and appreciate the fact that I can bring every element about me to work.

“I love that I’m encouraged to commit time both to my technical role, helping to launch BMS’ first CAR T commercial product, and to helping to improve benefits for my fellow LGBTQIA+ employees and employee family members” ~ Eliza Dornbush, CAR T Process Engineer, Seattle, Washington

What I do - I am a process engineer focused on late stage development of CAR T, a type of treatment using a patient's T cells - a type of immune system cell. I am also one of the co-leads for our Seattle chapter of PRIDE Alliance and was a co-founder of Queer Science at Juno Therapeutics.

Why BMS is a great place to work - I’m excited by BMS’ dedication to both talking about, and investing in, programs that improve diversity and inclusion at every level in the workplace.  One opportunity I’ve been able to take advantage of is participation in the BMS Pride Alliance Benefits team, which works to advise the company on benefits directly affecting the LGBTQIA+ community.  I love that I’m encouraged to commit time both to my technical role and to working to improve benefits for my fellow LGBTQIA+ employees and employee family members. When engaging with BMS leadership, I feel equally comfortable in my identity – as a woman in STEM, as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, and as a strong proponent of anti-racism and intersectional feminism in the workplace.

“I have been able to be my authentic self at BMS since my first day and continue to see that encouragement in meetings, town halls and across all groups within the company. The company celebrates diverse views and perspectives and acknowledges that diversity is not one or two dimensional. We are all multilayered and BMS acknowledges such differences and supports them” ~ Christopher Torres, Associate Director, Lawrenceville, New Jersey

What I do - I am an Associate Director in External Affairs within Worldwide Patient Safety, responsible for drug safety agreements with our collaboration partners.

Why BMS is a great place to work - I love working at BMS because we are all aligned with who we are working for - our patients. I have been able to be my authentic self at BMS since my first day and continue to see that encouragement in meetings, town halls and across all groups within the company. The company celebrates diverse views, welcomes different perspectives and acknowledges that diversity is not one or simply two dimensional. We are all multilayered; BMS recognizes such differences and applauds them.  I feel that no matter what meeting or event, my voice is always heard, my ideas are analyzed and I have been supported for always being ME.
